Back in my long-ago engineering days, we were once shown a massive motor in a lab. It could, we were told, drive all sorts of experiments in the lab. Noticing a switch and a bright warning panel on the side, we asked the bored electrical engineering professor: 'What does this switch do?'
It causes the motor to flip over to gas supply, he said, and then it generates electricity.
Generates?�Electricity?�What?�Really?"

BEIJING - Chinese steel mills and mobile phone factories are being idled and thousands of homes in one area are doing without electricity as local governments order power cuts to meet energy-saving targets set by Beijing.
Rolling blackouts and enforced power cuts are affecting key industrial areas. The prosperous eastern city of Taizhou turned off street lights and ordered hotels and shopping malls to cut power use. In Anping County southwest of Beijing, an area known as China's wire-manufacturing capital, thousands of factories and homes have endured daylong blackouts over the past two weeks.

Wall Street - Futures Dip on Weak Employment Picture - CNBC
Wall Street stock index futures pointed to a lower start on Thursday as after government data showed a larger-than-expected rise in weekly jobless claims.The Labor Department said new jobless claims rose 19,000 to 479,000, a good deal more than the 2,000 expected increase. Futures had been mostly flat before the jobs numbers came out but immediately turned negative after the release .
